Simple Kampung Life - Basketball Evening

Kimmarun Boy CNY evening were spent on basketball court with his best pal Mun and a few teenage boys of the kampung.

The boys say they are 'Lao dang yi zhuang'. After a few rounds, both took off their t-shirts. Movements became slower, but the spirit is still alive. They are the 'The Shirtless Duo/Tua'... :P

Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge

Rear view of The Dredge

A tin dredge is like a floating factory. This one, named Tanjung Tualang Dredge No. 5, or TT5,  weighs 4,500 tons and is supported by a pontoon of 75 meters in length, 35 meters in width and 3 meters in depth. It was built in England in 1938 by F.W.Payne & Son which, at that time, was a major design engineering company in bucketline dredges.

Front View of The Tin Dredge

Tin dredges work by scooping up bucket loads of tin-bearing soil at the front end, which then passes through an oscillating drum and a system of jigs and screens to extract the tin, before spewing out the waste material at the rear end through a number of chutes.

This dredge was built for the Southern Malayan Tin Dredging Ltd, a company formed in 1926 which operated a further 5 dredges in the Batu Gajah and Tanjung Tualang area. TT5 was in operation for 44 years until 1982 by which time the Malaysian tin industry was in rapid decline due to a combination of exhausted tin deposits, low tin prices and high operating costs.

All the tin mining and dredging activity which took place for over a hundred years has left behind a pockmarked landscape running for hundreds of miles down the length of Peninsular Malaysia. But the scars have filled with water and cleaned up quite well  and now serve new roles as fishing ponds, wetlands, water features for housing developments and so on.

The first package (RM5 for adults and RM3 for children less than 60cm tall) will include a movie, visit to the dredge museum and a tour of the dredge from outside.

The second package (RM15 for adults, RM8 for children aged 12 years and above) features tours inside the dredge.

Chinese Chun Lian

Chun lian is a special type of Duilian, or couplet. It is used only during the Chinese New Year as part of its celebration. While duilian is permanent, chunlian is a temporary decoration to be placed on the entrance of the house, somewhat akin to Halloween and Christmas decorations.

Duilian comprises of a couplet written on vertical strips of red paper in the best calligraphic style one can muster. In addition, a third horizontal piece may be posted across and on top the door.

Chun lian is written on red paper with ink. Red is a very lucky color for the Chinese, it frightens off the Chinese New Year monster 'Nian' who arrives at this time of year and destroys crops and homes. "Nian" has three weaknesses: it was frightened by noise, sunshine, and the color red. So villagers built fires, set off firecrackers, and painted the doors to their houses red and placed red couplets beside the doors. Red to the Chinese also represents good fortune, fame and riches.

We found an uncle writing chun Lian this morning at Wangsa Maju pasar. We bought 2 for this Chinese New Year...RM20...But then again, art is PRICELESS!

The location of this restaurant is opposite  a condominium in Taman Desa. The food was very oiishi probably because the master chef is from Japan.

Lee Yee Birthday Celebration@Alexis Bistro

We celebrate Lee Yee's birthday in a fun and jazzy night at Alexis Bistro. There was live performance by Shahrizan Borhan, along with his two talented kid. The ambience of the restaurant was dark and relaxing.
The group ordered a total of 18 items and we ate like there's no tommorow. This is what we ate:

Starters

Mains

A dozen of oysters

Mushroom Pie

Ravioli

Seafood Pizza1

Seafood Pizza2

Nadi Dagang

Desserts

Bread Pudding

Tiramisu

Note: they don't serve water after 10pm. You'd need to order a drink from the menu

Generally, we gave a 3 1/2 out of 5 star for this restaurant. Kimmarun boy's favorite is Mushroom pie and mine is Bread Pudding. I love dessert best...

Taste              3 1/2 stars
Ambience       4 stars
Performance   3 1/2 stars

As the performance starts at 10pm, it's ideal that you book for a dinner slot 8pm. We booked for 7pm and did quite a bit of waiting. Fortunately, I have a group of very patient friends :P
